The Centre for Special Education

It is people who count, not the disability

This centre for special education also serves as resource, research and Demonstration centre and is effectively the face of our organization. The focus is on children of school going age. Classes are divided according to age and ability. There are structured individual programmes for individual children and class-level goals that must be met.

Services

Services offered by the Day Centre include special education, pre-vocational training, therapy (physiotherapy, speech and alternative and augmentative communication training, vision training occupational therapyand movement therapy), counselling, computer training,co-curricular activities such as art and crafts, music and sports. There is also a library for the students.

The students also participate in competitions and projects conducted by mainstream schools and other organizations working with children with disabilities. They go on educational tours and picnics. The Centre ensures the availability of mobility aids, orthotic aids, communication aids, specific furniture, and transportation for students. All the required support for medical facilities and surgery is provided to the students.

A Dynamic Programme

TNo child is fitted into a programme. On the other hand, new initiatives have been evolved to meet the unique needs of a particular individual or a group of children.

The Centre for Special Education started the academic stream in 1986-87. Today there are children from VidyaSagar who appear for Grade Ten and Grade Twelve exams through the state board or the NIOS. All students receive education inputs and the teaching methodology depends on the needs of the students.

The Unit for Children with profound multiple disabilities was started in 1986 -87 and skills training unit started in 1995. VidyaSagar is one of the very few organizations that offers services for children with profound multiple disabilities.

The 'Matrix' class was started for students with profound motor disabilities in 2007. The USP of the class is technology - technology that enables our older and more severely disabled students to access and pursue education, hobbies and interests, and improve their quality of life.

Resource Demonstration and Training Centre

The day centre provides resource support to all departments within VidyaSagar and functions as an effective demonstration centre. All trainees including the students of the PG diploma course at VidyaSagar and community rehabilitation workers gain their practical knowledge from here.

Students from various disciplines such as sociology, psychology, socialwork, physiotherapy and speech therapy come as interns to the Day Centre. There are also interns from universities of other countries who benefit from the centre.

Action research and creating resources

VidyaSagar networks with various organizations to find answers to some of the diverse and complex needs of the students in the centre. A number of students do their project studies at the day centre. This networking helps us to create the much needed linkages for resources.
